The Local Area

Whether you are 9 or 90, active or less so, there is something for you in the Taynuilt area. We are a walkers and bikers paradise and have easy access to both the western isles for wonderful day trips to Mull, Iona and beyond, as well as Glen Coe and Fort William for the more serious hill walkers and adrenaline junkies. Take a look at the options below, and there is a lot more detail provided in your suite. We are always happy to advise and help with bookings for any trips.

Cycling: Bring your own cycle and we have a secure building to leave them in overnight or there is a local rental company. We are located on the main Fort William to Oban cycle route that passes through unrivalled scenery along the way. Take a picnic into the Glen and spend a few hours by the burn or marvelling at the stone circle and standing stones. You are treading in the footprints of the ancient kings en route to Iona.

Visit the Islands: For the early birds, take a tour of the islands of Mull, Iona and Staffa, or take a leisurely trip to Kerrera for tea, or Lismore to explore the ruins. The ferries from Oban go to most of the Hebredian islands, and a good many can easily be visited as a day trip.

Seil: Take a trip over the Bridge over the Atlantic to the isle of Seil. One of the original slate islands, it is now home to Seafaris and sea kayaking. There are a couple of wonderful pubs for lunch and a trip over the water to Easdale is a must.

Oban: The seafood capital of Scotland does not get the name by accident. Try some of the local restaurants at the harbour or even get fish and chips and eat them looking out over the Bay while watching the boats come and go. Take a drive to Dunollie Castle and Ganavan Sands or to McCraigs Tower to see the view. For those who enjoy a wee dram, Oban distillery is right on the harbour front.

Taynuilt area: Visit Ben Cruachan – the hollow mountain and take a trip inside the mountain to see the power station. The old iron works are Bonawe are well worth a visit to see both the foundry and to take in the views of Loch Etive from the pier. Inverawe Smokeries have some wonderful smoked products from seafood to meats and are to die for.
